Private sellers: no selling fees
If you live in the UK and sell on a private account, eBay charges no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee when an item sells. That covers everything except cars, motorcycles and other vehicles. You get 300 free listings a month (400 with an eBay Shop), and each listing after that costs 35p.
Private sellers only pay when they choose to: optional upgrades such as a subtitle (£2) or Gallery Plus (£2.50), more than 300 listings in a month, or a buyer outside the UK. Delivering abroad costs 3% of the total sale. All private seller fees already include VAT.
Sell a £50.00 item with £5.00 postage to a buyer in the US and the 3% fee is £1.65. Sell it to someone in the UK and eBay takes nothing.
Business sellers: what eBay charges
A business account pays three fees on every sale:
- a final value fee, a percentage of the total sale that depends on the category,
- a per order fee of 40p, or 30p when the order is £10 or less,
- a regulatory operating fee of 0.35% of the total sale.
The total sale is the item price plus postage, including any VAT in the price. eBay quotes business fees without VAT and adds VAT on top, which the calculator includes unless you untick it.
| Category | Final value fee |
|---|---|
| Everything Else, Crafts, Pet Supplies, Event Tickets, Wholesale & Job Lots | 12.9% |
| Business, Office & Industrial | 12.5% |
| Clothes, Shoes & Accessories | 11.9% |
| Trainers | 11.9%, or 7% when the item price is £100 or more |
| Women's Bags & Handbags | 12.9% up to £800, then 7% |
| Collectables, Toys & Games, Sports Memorabilia, Antiques, Art, Stamps, Baby, Garden, Health & Beauty, Musical Instruments, Sporting Goods | 10.9% |
| Books, Films & TV, Music, Video Games, and the rest of Computers, Mobile Phones, Cameras and Sound & Vision | 9.9% |
| Mobile phones, laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, cameras, lenses, TVs, headphones, hi-fi | 6.9% up to £1,000, then 3% |
| Video game consoles | 6.9% up to £400, then 2% |
| Home, Furniture & DIY | 11.9% up to £500, then 7.9% |
| Furniture, Bath, Plumbing & Fixtures | 10.9% up to £500, 7.9% to £1,000, then 3% |
| Appliances, DIY Tools & Workshop Equipment | 6.9% up to £400, then 3% |
| Jewellery | 14.9% up to £1,000, then 4% |
| Watches, Parts & Accessories | 12.9% up to £750, then 3% |
| Coins | 10.9% up to £450, then 3% |
| Vehicle Parts & Accessories | 9.5% up to £750, then 3% (tyres, sat navs and power tools 6.9%, then 3%) |
The tiered rates work like tax bands: the first rate applies to the part of the sale up to the threshold and the lower rate only to the part above it. eBay lists a few smaller exceptions too, such as 5% on NFTs and 11.9% on hair extensions and wigs.
Worked example for a business seller
A £50.00 item in Everything Else with £5.00 postage:
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Final value fee | £7.10 |
| Per order fee | £0.40 |
| Regulatory operating fee | £0.19 |
| VAT on eBay fees | £1.54 |
| Total fees | £9.23 |
| You get paid | £45.77 |
You charged £55.00 and eBay keeps £9.23, which is 16.8% of it. If you are VAT registered and reclaim the VAT, your real cost is £7.69.

eBay UK fee questions
Is it free to sell on eBay UK?
Yes, for UK-based private sellers. There is no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee, and you get 300 free listings a month. You only pay for optional upgrades, listings beyond 300 a month, or delivery outside the UK. Vehicles are not included.
How much does eBay take from a £100 sale as a business seller?
In Everything Else with free postage, £16.38 including VAT: 12.9% plus the 40p per order fee and the 0.35% regulatory operating fee, then 20% VAT. Without VAT it is £13.65.
What is the eBay regulatory operating fee?
Business sellers pay 0.35% of the total sale, including postage, on top of the final value fee. UK-based private sellers do not pay it.
Do eBay UK fees include VAT?
Private seller fees include 20% VAT. Business seller fees are quoted without VAT, and eBay adds it as a separate charge. If you are VAT registered you can usually reclaim it.
Does eBay charge fees on postage?
For business sellers, yes. The final value fee and the regulatory operating fee are both a percentage of the item price plus postage, so free postage with a higher price costs the same.
What is the eBay UK per order fee?
Business sellers pay 40p per order, or 30p when the order is £10 or less. Some Collectables and Home, Furniture and DIY listings pay 10p on orders up to £10. Private sellers pay no per order fee.
