Worked example

You sell a print for $40.00 and charge $5.00 shipping. The buyer pays 7% sales tax, so the order total is $48.15.

FeeAmount
Listing fee$0.20
Transaction fee$2.93
Payment processing$1.69
Total fees$4.82
You get paid$40.18

Etsy takes $4.82, which is 10.7% of the $45.00 you charged. The sales tax goes to the state, so it is not part of your payout.

Why cheap items lose more to fees

The $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing fee are the same on every sale. On a $15.00 item with free shipping they add up to $1.88, or 12.5% of the sale. Bundling small items, or listing them as sets, keeps more of each sale.

Offsite Ads

Etsy advertises listings on Google, social media and other sites. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys within 30 days, you pay an extra fee on that order. It is 15% for shops that made under $10,000 in the last 365 days, and those shops can opt out. Once a shop passes $10,000, the rate drops to 12% but you can no longer opt out. The fee is capped at $100 per order.

Sellers outside the US

Sellers in other countries pay the same listing and transaction fees, with different processing rates: UK 4% + £0.20, most of the EU 4% + €0.30, Canada 3% + C$0.25 for domestic and US buyers. Some countries also pay a regulatory operating fee, such as 0.48% in the UK and 0.50% in Canada. If your listing currency differs from your bank currency, Etsy adds a 2.5% conversion fee. The Etsy UK and Etsy Canada calculators work these out in pounds and Canadian dollars.

Etsy fee questions

How much does Etsy take from a $20 sale?

With no shipping and no Offsite Ad, Etsy takes $2.35: the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 processing.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the payment processing fee both apply to what the buyer pays for shipping, so moving shipping into the item price does not change your fees.

Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?

For US sellers, the transaction fee is not charged on sales tax, but the 3% + $0.25 processing fee is, because it is based on the full amount the buyer pays.

Do I pay the listing fee if the item does not sell?

Yes. The $0.20 is charged when you publish a listing and again each time it renews, every four months by default, whether it sells or not.

Can I turn off Offsite Ads?

Only while your shop has made under $10,000 in sales in the past 365 days. After that, Offsite Ads are required, at a 12% fee on sales they bring in.

What percentage does Etsy take overall?

For a typical US sale without an Offsite Ad, about 10% to 12% of what the buyer pays, more on cheap items because of the fixed fees. A $40.00 item with $5.00 shipping costs $4.73 in fees.
