You sell a print for £40.00 and charge £5.00 postage to a buyer in the UK. You have not added a VAT number, so Etsy adds VAT to its fees.

The 20p processing fee and the listing fee are the same on every sale, so cheap items lose a bigger share. A £8.00 item pays £1.48, or 18.5% of the sale.
VAT on Etsy fees
Etsy's fees are listed without VAT. If you are based in the UK and have not given Etsy a VAT number, Etsy charges VAT on every fee, including payment processing, and sends you a monthly VAT invoice. Once you add a VAT number, Etsy stops charging it. Untick the VAT box in the calculator to see your fees that way.
The regulatory operating fee
Etsy charges sellers in a handful of countries an extra fee to cover the cost of local regulation. For the UK it is 0.48% of the item price plus postage and gift wrap. It appears in your payment account with your other fees, and VAT applies to it like any other fee.
Offsite Ads and currency
If a buyer clicks one of Etsy's ads on another site and orders within 30 days, you pay 15% of that order, or 12% once your shop has sold US$10,000 in a year. Shops under that level can opt out. The fee is capped at US$100 per order, converted to pounds.
List in pounds if your bank account is in pounds. If your listing currency differs from your payment account currency, Etsy adds a 2.5% currency conversion fee.
